Toyota’s and BMW’s partnership is finally bringing something tangible. After we saw a testing model of the new generation Supra it became pretty clear that the German car manufacturer hides Z4’s successor somewhere. Today we managed to catch a camouflaged prototype of the 2018 BMW Z5.

As you can see, the upcoming mid-size sports car won’t change just its name. The Z5 will also bring an all-new design and some amazing options under the hood. Judging by the spy shots, the new model may not be significantly bigger from its predecessor, so the new number in the name definitely means something else. Perhaps more money for the manufacturer?

Anyway, the testing model sports pretty interesting exterior design. The car lost its distinctive retractable hard-top roof in favor of a soft-top. In the front, the roadster gets a new and wider grille and a large air intake below. The headlights are going to be different from these you see. It’s because the testing model uses some temporary solutions. The new one will be a lot more aggressive and slimmer. However, the rear end seems to be ready. The new tailgate gets a lip spoiler, as well as quite narrow lights. Of course, those dual exhaust tips are something that we expected to see.

The 2018 BMW Z5 will compete against such famous rivals such as the Jaguar F-Type and Porsche 911, so it needs to have some amazing options under the hood. Still, the carmaker has no plan to introduce the M-division model. Instead, the mid-size roadster will likely offer a base inline-4 and an optional inline-6. The engines will be mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox and rear wheel drive. Yet, there might be an optional all-wheel drive model if the carmaker decides to introduce a plug-in hybrid. Toyota will offer the Supra hybrid, so the German car manufacturer should add its own electrified variant as well.

In any case, the 2018 BMW Z5 should be introduced pretty soon, most likely at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show. The carmaker won’t announce the price before the official debut, but we think it will be around $50K.
