Mazda is expanding its SUV segment with one more CX model. However, this so-called 2018 Mazda CX-8 won’t be available worldwide, at least not right away. For now, the new three-row crossover will take the open flagship place just home in Japan.
Since the automaker released a teaser photo a few days ago, we know what to expect from the new high-riding vehicle for home use. As you can see, the 2018 CX-8 will look pretty much the same as the all-new CX-4, which is available in China Only. The main difference is SUV’s footprint. According to information we have, the CX-8 is 6.9 inches shorter, 4.9 inches narrower and 0.7 inches lower than the CX-9. However, there are 115 inches between front and rear wheels, which is identical to CX-9’s wheelbase.
The carmaker hasn’t provided any close information about the interior or techs, but they released a shot a month ago. Judging by the photo, the 2018 Mazda Cx-8 will have six seats – all equipped with armrest and cupholders. Still, that’s just an upscale variant. The base model will be able to accommodate up to seven people.
The Japanese flagship will be available with only one engine. It’s a 2.2-liter turbocharged inline-4 diesel engine, which produces 175 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. Drivers will be able to choose between front- and all-wheel drive, a six-speed will be the only gearbox though.
The all-new Mazda CX-8 will be available in Japanese dealerships before the end of this year. The exact price is unknown, as it is the decision whether the crossover could become available worldwide later.
