2018 Mitsubishi Outlander Phev Available in U.S. For $35,535

Is there anything better form a cheap and good mid-size SUV? Well, actually there is. It’s a cheap and amazing plug-in hybrid mid-size high-riding vehicle. You probably think that there is no such thing. We thought the same as you until today. However, starting from now things are drastically changed, because the 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is coming in North America, featuring unbelievably low prices. According to the car manufacturer, the plug-in hybrid will cost $35,535 including a destination charge of $940.

Now, it’s fair to say that the crossover isn’t all-new at all. Mitsubishi sells it overseas for around three years, but it’s finally here we are sure it’s going to be a class winner without any doubt. The 2018 Outlander PHEV may be the segment leader regarding the performance, yet it’s close to most of the rivals.

Still, taking into account that the mid-size SUV class currently offers $60K+ models only, Mitsubishi’s upcoming plug-in crossover sounds like a most reasonable choice. Moreover, the vehicle proved to be good over the years in Europe and Japan, which is a reason more to believe in a big success.

Performance-wise, the 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander plug-in hybrid relies on a 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine that is teamed up with an electric motor. The system is in charge of the front axle only, while the rear wheels draw power from the second 60kW electric motor.

The motors are mated to a 12-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery, which can be charged either with regenerative braking or by a DC fast charger. The charger is quite unique and the fastest way to fill up the battery. For instance, the 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV charges its battery to 50 percent in just 30 minutes, while any other model with a 240-volt outlet needs about four hours. It’s a benefit that may be crucial for potential buyers of the mid-size SUV. The only thing that the crossover misses compared to the regular model is the third row of seating, but that’s the majority in the class.
