We have to admit that we worried about CLA’s future when Mercedes decided to make the A-Class sedan. Now we don’t worry at all because the carmaker is testing the all-new 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLA as we speak, which means that there will be two compact sedans available.
The prototype of the compact vehicle has been spotted camouflaged. However, the camo is fairly thin, so we can figure out what’s happening beneath. Judging by the spy shots, the redesigned 2019 Mercedes CLA will largely resemble the CLS. Moreover, it looks exactly as the scaled-down version of the CLS. This is not bad at all. On the contrary, because thus the compact sedan looks better than the A-class thanks to a lower roof. The styling may be called coupe-like, but the 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLA will never become a coupe for sure.
The redesigned sedan will use an updated architecture. It’s actually the MFA2 platform which is underpinning all Mercedes’ new compact vehicles. It saves weight thanks to lightweight materials, and it provides more powertrain options.
Speaking of which, the 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLA will use a turbocharged inline-4 engine which should provide around 400 horsepower at most. The 2.0-liter mill will be paired with an updated 4Matic all-wheel-drive system via a seven-speed dual clutch transmission. The base CLA200 will be mated to a 1.4-liter engine that produces 163 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. The CLA250 model uses the same 2.0-liter banger as the vanilla, AMG version, but it’s limited to “just” 224 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque.
Mercedes won’t miss the chance to add the MBUX. The interface is fully-digital as includes digital screens for the instrument cluster and infotainment system. Though, the carmaker will offer touch ability for the infotainment screen.
Since it’s going to be better and prettier than the A-Class the 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLA will have to cost more. While the A-Class sedan starts at $30K, the more attractive compact sedan will probably be priced at $33K.
