2019 VW Tiguan Plug-In Hybrid: Spy and Powertrain

We’ve just caught a prototype of what seems to be some kind of the new Tiguan crossover. More precisely, the testing vehicle looks pretty much the same as the Volkswagen Tiguan GTE concept from 2015, which is pretty odd because the German car manufacturer has introduced the new-gen model already. According to the latest reports, the carmaker went in snowy Sweden to check out how the PHEV powertrain works on cold weather. Yes, this is reportedly the all-new 2019 VW Tiguan Plug-In Hybrid.

The vehicle is going to be introduced pretty soon. If the carmaker decides to skip the upcoming Geneva Motor Show, the Tiguan PHEV will probably make its official debut at the Beijing Motor Show in April. Volkswagen’s decision to make the plug-in hybrid to look like the GTC concept is quite logical. The concept design is quite attractive, yet not too aggressive, so it seems perfect for the PHEV. Though, since the regular model shares a lot with the aforementioned concept the 2019 VW Tiguan Plug-In Hybrid and gasoline sibling will basically share everything except the powertrain. The only obvious difference is a different front bumper and nothing else. The interior design should be pretty much identical as well.

The 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan PHEV will most likely rely on a 1.4-liter turbo engine and an electric motor. Altogether, the system should be able to deliver up to 220 horsepower and an electric driving range of 31 miles. Some reports claim a completely different theory regarding the drivetrain. The crossover will allegedly use a 2.0-liter engine with 148 hp and 184 pound-feet of torque and a 114-hp electric motor. Together, the powerplant will reportedly deliver 220 horsepower, too. However, the estimated electric driving range is just 20 miles. We don’t know which one powertrain is really coming, though we found the first idea better because of a far better drive range and probably better fuel economy. Read More

Either way, the 2019 VW Tiguan Plug-In Hybrid is not going to be introduced in North America.
