At the moment, Mercedes’ amazing CLA model has no rival worth of mentioning. However, this is going to change pretty soon, since the Bavarian automaker has something new in mind. It’s the 2020 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe – a gorgeous coupe-like sedan. We still have no official confirmation of the automaker when and where is going to be introduced the new model, but according to the latest reports, the car will see the light of day in the coming months.
Even though it doesn’t look like the BMW 1 Series at all, the 2 Series Gran Coupe will have a lot in common with the manufacturer’s entry-point sedan. More precisely, these two are going to share the same front-wheel-drive platform, so-called FAAR design, as well as pretty much the same options under the hood.
Potential buyers are going to be able to choose between several 3- and 4-cylinder units, both the diesel and gasoline. The base model will most definitely host a 134-hp 1.5-liter three-cylinder mill, while a2.0-litre four-cylinder unit should come in two “flavors” 181 hp and 242 hp. The oil-burners will use 2.0-liter
Styling-wise, compared to the 1 Series, the 2020 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe gets a sleeker roofline and a fastback design in the rear. The car also features longer rear overhangs, while the front end looks more aggressive thanks to the lowered hood design. Based on the prototype, the car definitely uses LED technology for both headlights and taillights. According to our insiders, the four-door 2 Series Gran Coupe will be exactly 177 inches long. Also, the automaker will introduce an M Performance model which will get a stiffer suspension, beefier brakes, and 18-inch wheels. The version will reportedly use a 300-hp powertrain which is going to consist of a 252-horsepower combustion engine and 87-hp electric motor.
