A prototype you see here is an all-new 2020 BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe. The vehicle will become available in 2019, most likely worldwide. The sharp-looking car will basically have a lot in common with the all-new 1-Series. It’s going to use the same platform and engines, but the 2-Series Gran Coupe will be, well, definitely more handsome car.
BMW’s front-wheel-drive UKL architecture has proven to be good already because most of Mini’s are riding on it. However, the 2020 BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe will feature a unique, attractive design, with sharp lines in the front and fastback design around back. Compared to the 1-Series, the newcomer sports a bit longer rear overhang, promising better driving dynamics and handling.
Under the hood, the 2020 BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe will likely rely on the same options as the 1-Series. However, except downsized 3- and 4-cylinder mills, the car will also host a powerful 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4, which is going to deliver over 200 horsepower. The premium compact will use both manual and automatic transmissions, so potential buyers can choose between 6-speed manual and 8-speed automatic. Of course, all-wheel drive will be one of optional, but this is primarily a front-wheel-drive model.
Some reports indicate that the 2-Series Gran Coupe could get the powerful M235i version as well. If this happens, you can expect around 300 horsepower under the hood of the topper.
BMW hasn’t said whether they plan to offer the premium compact in North America, but we are pretty sure it’s going to be available, simply because Mercedes announced the arrival of its CLA.
