2020 Chevrolet Suburban: Spy Shots and Redesign Details

A prototype of the next-generation Suburban is finally spotted. We were pretty sure that the automaker is preparing a completely new “suit” for the popular nameplate, though we had no actual proof so far. Today, however, the 2020 Chevrolet Suburban has been spied totally camouflaged, which means that the wraps are hiding a totally new SUV.

The full-size SUV appears to feature pretty much the same footprint as the predecessor. However, that’s pretty much everything these two have in common. The new-gen model will use a completely new architecture. More precisely, it’s going to share the T1XX platform with the new-gen Silverado 1500. The bodywork featuring plenty of aluminum, so the redesigned full-size SUV should lose around 300 pounds. Aside it’s will share the same platform, the body-on-frame SUV will borrow a few styling cues from the pickup truck sibling. As far as we’ve heard the camouflaged 2020 Chevy Suburban is hiding the same headlights and grille as the pickup.

The automaker has tried to hide the all-new independent rear suspension, but that’s not as easy as it looks like. The system is replacing so long the usual solid rear, which is great because the SUV should significantly improve comfort.

Performance-wise, the 2020 Suburban is getting ready to receive a four-cylinder engine. Don’t be disappointed right away, because the all-new 2.7-liter turbocharged inline-4 unit is not as bad as you think so. No, the engine delivers 310 horsepower and 348 lb-ft of twist and it’s paired with cylinder deactivation system.

Still, in case you don’t believe in small mills, you can always wait for the 5.3-liter V8 Suburban. The new-gen model will use an advanced option of the V8 thanks to the Dynamic Fuel Management cylinder deactivation technology. The feature will be a standard part of the vanilla RST model which is going to use a 6.2-liter V8 engine. The option will be paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission and will deliver 420 hp and 460 pound-feet of torque.

The next-generation Chevy Suburban will most likely be introduced early next year at the 2019 Detroit Auto Show.
