2020 Ford Focus ST Spied: The Hot Hatch Gets 275 Horsepower, New Platform and Design

The Euro-specs four-generation Ford Focus has been unveiled a few weeks ago, but we still have nothing official regarding the U.S. version of the car. The North American car market will definitely get a slightly different model. Still, this is not why we are here. No, the real reason is the latest spy shots of the 2020 Ford Focus ST which has been spotted testing at the Nürburgring in Germany.

New Platform For Ford Focus Car

Focus’ hot version will just like the regular new-gen model use Blue Oval’s new modular platform for small cars. The architecture will improve both rigidity and handling of the amazing compact. Moreover, the regular model increased the rigidity of chassis and suspension by 20 percent, which will be the case with the 2020 Focus ST in the worst-case scenario.

More Power Under The Hood

Performance-wise, well, according to the latest reports, the new-generation Ford Focus ST will replace the current 2.0-liter turbo-4 with a smaller yet more potent 1.5-liter turbocharged inline-4. The engine will reportedly produce 275 horsepower thanks to an improved turbocharging system. However, in contrast to today’s model which is strictly mated to a manual gearbox, the 2020 Ford Focus ST will get an optional 8-speed automatic transmission. All the power that the incredible 1.5-liter turbo produces will be most likely directed strictly to front wheels irrespective of which gearbox the hot hatch uses.

Exterior Redesign And New Features

The camouflaged prototype doesn’t reveal much. Though, as we see it, the hot Focus hosts pretty much the same exterior design as the regular model, which has been spiced up with a number of more aggressive details. Upfront, the hot hatch seems to host hex-mesh grille, as well as lower and wider air intakes. The Ford Focus ST has been equipped with a single center exhaust pipe so far, but this is going to change with the arrival of the new-generation model that’s fitted with a dual exhaust outlet. There’s also a spoiler at the top of the liftgate, while the wheels appear to be larger than before and equipped with special, performance tires.

Do we need to mention that the 2020 Ford Focus ST sits lower than the regular model? Well, of course not because this is so obvious. The lower ride height is matched with a sportier tune, so expect a wild experience as always. In addition, the car will be loaded with plenty of driver-assistant features. The list is very long, but forward-collision warning, adaptive cruise control, and adaptive front lighting are worth mentioning. We haven’t seen the cabin so far, but we expect some cool color options and plenty of extras, such as special steering wheel and Recaro seats. Of course, Ford will not skip the chance to put ST badges across the entire interior.

2020 Ford Focus ST Will Be Imported From China

Not that we don’t believe in Blue Oval’s production facilities in China, though you have to admit that the 2020 Ford Focus ST made in China sounds too weird to be true. Unfortunately, that’s the truth, because Focus’ factory in Michigan has been converted into the new home of the future Ranger and Bronco models. Anyway, the hot hatch made in China will cost somewhere around $26k. The car manufacturer hasn’t released anything regarding the date of arrival, but we think it will be available before the end of 2019.
