A prototype of Mercedes’ new-generation GLE Coupe has been spotted testing two times in a few days. It means that the German car manufacturer has a plan to change the awkward-looking model with the new one, which will feature a completely new platform, engines, and automaker’s latest technologies.
Still, regardless of the fact we saw the crossover testing twice in a short time, we think that the second-generation model won’t be introduced this year. No, because the regular GLE SUV has to arrive later this year. As for the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe, it’s going to make its debut sometime in 2019, most likely next spring.
Exterior and Interior Improvements
Styling-wise, the second-generation GLE Coupe will definitely receive an evolutionary redesign. Meaning, it’s going to keep its distinctive shape; while there will be plenty of new details, especially in the ends. In addition, the coupe-SUV will also slightly grow in both length and width. On the other hand, the weight appears to be reduced just a little bit.
Upfront, the crossover keeps a long nose, yet a totally different grille and headlights, as well as a completely redesigned front bumper with larger air intakes. In the rear, the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe gets a new hatch with some sort of wing. The taillights appear to be borrowed from the new-gen GLE, while the exhaust system hosts a pair of rectangular tips.
The spy shots don’t indicate what’s going to happen with the interior of the next-gen GLE Coupe. However, the extra inches between wheels promise more room inside. Plus, the cabin will definitely receive a wide digital display which will be in charge of both instrument and infotainment duties.
Engines and Transmission
Mercedes’ amazing coupe-SUV will mostly stick to the inline-6 units. Most of them will have a 3-liter displacement but the output will vary from around 300 up to 430 hp. The awesome SUV will not skip the chance to try Mercedes’ new in-line six-cylinder engine that made the debut under the hood of the latest CLS 450. The mighty mill delivers 362 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of a twist by itself, plus it adds the power of the aforementioned system.
The most potent 6-cylinder unit will be available under the hood of the entry AMG model. This so-called GLE 53 will use a 3.0-liter inline 6 turbo which will be rated at 429 hp and 384 lb-ft of grunt. The topping AMG model will dump the current 5.5-liter engine.
The mighty mill will be replaced by a 4.0-liter V8 that delivers 563 hp and 553 lb-ft in base trim, while the ‘S’-treated option should be able to develop 603 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque. The carmaker will offer one diesel-powered new-gen GLE Coupe which will reportedly be limited to 340 horsepower. No matter which unit the potential buyer chooses it will get a standard all-wheel-drive system and 9-speed automatic transmission.
