2018 Peugeot 208 Mule Spotted In Sweden: The New Hatch Will Become Bigger And Hybrid

We managed to catch the first testing mule of Peugeots next-generation 208. The supermini uses the body of the current model, but it shows what might be changed. According to our insiders, the 2018 Peugeot 208 has been spotted in cold and snowy Swede, but regardless of the fact that it’s freezing out there, the model managed to become wider somehow.

We are kidding of course, but the future 208 really appears to be bigger from today’s version. We know that because the testing mule shows beefier wheel arches, which usually means it’s getting widened front and rear tracks. The wider and probably longer body along with a few additional inches between wheels will significantly increase room inside. This especially refers to the rear seat and the trunk’s capacity. As for the rest of the car’s cabin, it will probably get Peugeot’s i-Cockpit treatment and a new dash with a clean and a lot simpler design. Of course, the French automaker won’t skip the chance to add the smaller steering wheel, which slowly becomes their trademark.

The 2018 Peugeot 208 will use a new architecture. This so-called CMP (Common Modular Platform) will make the hatchback lighter, which will enable better fuel economy numbers. However, what’s more important, it will be able to underpin mild- and full-hybrid systems, as well as the regular petrol and diesel engines. Speaking of the standard mills, we have to mention that the next-generation 208 is definitely getting new generations of PSA’s BlueHDi diesel and PureTech units under the hood. The turbocharged 1.2-liter three-cylinder petrol engine is capable of delivering between 70 and 150 hp, while the larger 1.6-liter THP could pump out up to 220 hp. on the other hand, the oil-burner model will use a 1.5-liter unit that will be capable of producing between 75 and 120 hp.

Judging by the information we have, the second generation Peugeot 208 will be introduced next year at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show. This leaves plenty of time for updates, so stay tuned.
