2019 GMC Canyon Gets a Mid-Cycle Update: New Engine and Gearbox

GMC’s production facilities will be overloaded during the next year. Except that the manufacturer is currently working on its redesigned half-ton truck they are also developing its smaller pickup at the same time. Yes, our reliable source claims that the 2019 GMC Canyon will definitely arrive refreshed and better. Plus, they will reportedly introduce an off-road variant – something that matches Chevrolet’s Colorado ZR2.

While we know that the trail-ready truck is getting some off-road kit and unique suspension system, we are not so sure what to expect from the refreshed model. Okay, the 2019 Canyon will likely feature updated ends and new colors, plus the cab might get a redesigned dash and better infotainment, but that’s pretty much everything. Though, some reports suggest that the pickup should add an optional sunroof, which is not a bad idea at all.

It’s far more important what’s going to happen beneath the skin. Still, since we are talking about a mid-cycle refreshed truck, there is a small chance to see any platform update or lightweight materials. The biggest changes may happen under the hood. The facelifted 2019 GMC Canyon will allegedly feature both new engine and transmission. That new gearbox could be only the new 10-speed auto. However, if the option comes, we don’t expect to see today’s six-speed auto at all. Instead, an 8-speed will be standard. Of course, the truck will keep its only manual gearbox available.

Engine-wise, we can bet on a new turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder. This unit will deliver 272 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque, which is more from today’s 2.5-liter four mills that are limited to 200 horsepower and 191 pound-feet of torque. As for the 3.6-liter V6, it’s going to stay unchanged. The impressive engine currently produces 308 hp and 275 lb-ft of torque and this is more than enough power for the mid-size truck.

The 2019 GMC Canyon Diesel might feature some improvements under the hood. Judging by the information we have, the oil-chugging will boost both power and torque, jumping from 369 lb-ft to 400 pound-feet. If this turns out to be true, the refreshed 2019 Canyon will be unstoppable in the segment without any doubt.
