2020 BMW 1 Series Sedan Spied Testing in Munich

When BMW introduced its smallest 1 Series sedan back in 2017, the carmaker was pretty explicit that the car is built exclusively for the Chinese market. Things are a little bit different now because you can find the vehicle in Mexico as well. 2020 BMW 1 series is not going to last stop for the vehicle, though. According to the latest reports, the Bavarian automaker will offer the 2020 BMW 1 Series Sedan in Europe too.

This will not happen right away, because the carmaker has to do a mid-cycle update first. A prototype of what seems to be the updated BMW 1 Series Sedan has been spied testing today in Munich, very close to BMW’s technical center. The vehicle features camouflage around the entire lower half, which means that the mid-cycle refresh won’t be limited to headlights and taillights only. No, the 2020 BMW 1 Series Sedan also gets a more aggressive front fascia and a restyled grille. Bumpers appear to be totally redesigned as well, while the car sports more muscular appearance due to new side skirts.

The refreshed 1 Series Sedan will continue to use BMW Group’s UKL front-wheel-drive platform. More precisely, the car will stick to the existing architecture regardless of the fact that the automaker is working on an updated version of the UK. No, the updated chassis which is also known as FAAR will make debut with the hatchback version. The new underpinning is not just lighter than the current one, but it’s compatible with electric powertrains as well. Still, it won’t be available with the updated 2020 BMW 1 Series Sedan.

This means that there will no drastic changes under the hood as well. Moreover, the refreshed model will most probably keep things under the hood either untouched or slightly updated. Today’s entry-level model uses a turbocharged 1.5-liter engine that pumps out 136 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque. The mill is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission only. The “middle player” uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine with 192 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of twist, while the most potent manages to squeeze off 231 horsepower from the turbo-four. The unit is hooked up to an eight-speed automatic transmission.
