2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS: Spy Shots and Redesign Details

The new-generation GLS SUV won’t be ready to debut this year as we expected earlier. Instead, it’s going to arrive in early 2019 as the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS. The redesigned vehicle will be lighter, larger, and paired with Mercedes’ latest features. The prototype of the SUV has been spotted testing earlier today. The vehicle seems to feature production-ready shape, which is, we have to say, a lot more interesting than now.

The new-generation Mercedes-Benz GLS appears to feature a totally new shape, which is going to be a lot more dynamic than earlier. The most interesting changes are happening in the front where the SUV hosts a totally new chrome grille and a pair of aggressive full-LED headlights. There’s a massive bumper below that seems to feature more new air intakes. The rooflines are definitely more dynamic than earlier, while the rear hatch sports pretty narrow taillights. The oval shape of the exhaust tips looks weird to us, though this is likely a temporary solution.

Inside, the redesigned SUV will provide more space for all three rows of seating and a completely new infotainment system. Instead of the current COMAND system, Mercedes will add MBUX infotainment and two fully digital 12.3-inch screens.

Performance-wise, the carmaker will match the SUV with several interesting options. Thanks to the new MHA platform the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS will be able to use a new mild-hybrid technology that will instead of a 12-volt system use a 48-volt starter generator. The feature will be available with both 3.0-liter inline-6 and 4.0-liter V-8 units. Of course, the producer will not skip the chance to offer a plug-in hybrid powertrain, as well as a 4.0-liter twin-turbo mill for the AMG model that will reportedly develop around 630 horsepower. All engines will be mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.
