2020 Mercedes-Benz S-Class will get lighter bodywork, yet unchanged footprint

Judging by the testing mule, the new generation S-Class will keep its current proportions. Though the vehicle shows a bit wider track, so this might be the case with the production model too. Anyway, as we said, the new architecture will definitely host more lightweight materials, set aside from aluminum, the car will feature a large portion of carbon fiber as well.

Gasoline, plug-in hybrid, all-electric, fuel-cell…everything you can imagine

The MRA platform will be able to accommodate a range of new engine options. We are sure that the carmaker has no intention to get rid of gasoline options, but the highest accent will be on hybrids and electric drivetrains without any doubt. The thirsty mills should be treated by some mild-hybrid technology, which includes regenerative braking, while some reports indicate that Mercedes might add one fuel-cell unit under the hood. This seems pretty logical because they showed that they have the technology, while Germany constantly increases the number of fuel-cell station.

Level 3 autonomy

As for the advanced self-driving system, we have to admit that we don’t know much about it. However, it’s going to be named Level 3 autonomy. The car manufacturer promises some amazing results from the project and we believe them.

 

The development of the completely redesigned 2020 Mercedes-Benz S-Class has started, but it will last for another two years, so we will catch a number of testing models over the years. Still, the first actual prototypes with production body won’t be available for at least a year.
