The arrival of the new generation Jeep Grand Cherokee is scheduled for the next year, so we know it will arrive as the 2019 model. However, that is not too important a fact as it’s the newest official report from FCA. According to them, the 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee will share the platform with the Alfa Romeo Stelvio, which definitely made some worries for Cherokee’s true fans.
We are absolutely sure that the new generation Grand Cherokee won’t look bad at all. If they cross Jeep’s and Alfa’s genes, the beauty won’t miss, but we afraid that this won’t be the SUV we used to. The Stelvio is built on the same platform as the Giulia, so we are talking about a car-based platform. This will definitely make the 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee more agile and softer on the road, but totally useless off the road. Yes, the Stelvio features plenty of aluminum and composite plastics, so Jeep’s mid-size SUV should also shed some really serious weight. As for the styling changes, we are absolutely positive that the new generation SUV won’t look like Alfa Romeo’s SUV. The 2019 Grand Cherokee will rather keep some distinctive details like the grille and massive front bumper, but the rest of the exterior will be smoother and dynamic.
The carmaker will make some big changes under the hood too. The completely redesigned Grand Cherokee will probably borrow a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four from the Stelvio. The unit delivers 280 horsepower and 305 lb-ft of torque. As for the high-performance 2.9-liter mill, this one won’t end under the hood of the 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee, because there is no need for something like that. After all, the carmaker will introduce the Hellcat-powered model with 707 horsepower pretty soon, so the 505-hp strong turbo V-6 really doesn’t fit anywhere, at least not at this moment. On the other hand, the manufacturer won’t miss the chance to introduce the new-generation Grand Cherokee Diesel. The SUV will use an updated 3.0-liter EcoDiesel, which should produce around 250 HP. We are not so sure whether they plan to add a new 2.0-liter Hurricane engine. The unit will make its debut with the new generation Wrangler, and since it delivers 300 ponies, it seems like a good option for the 2019 Cherokee. However, it’s pretty clear that an eight-speed comes as a standard part of Jeep’s next mid-size SUV. It’s simple, the Stelvio uses this gearbox, so why wouldn’t the American sibling?
