2018 Toyota Tundra Gets Refreshed Exterior, Updated Tech, And New Transmission

Toyota’s second-generation Tundra pickup truck has been available for almost a decade without any important changes. What’s more worryingly, it appears that the Japanese car manufacturer isn’t planning any big changes anytime soon. According to the information we have, the current model will be available for three more years, but before the complete redesign, the producer will introduce a refreshed version. We know that because we managed to catch a partly camouflaged prototype that appears to be the 2018 Toyota Tundra.

Changes and Upgrades

As you can see the testing truck is wrapped just in the front. This means that the nose is getting most of the exterior changes. Judging by the spy shots, the new grille might get mesh treatment, which is something we already saw with the new TRD Sport that was introduced at this year’s Chicago auto show. In addition, the 2018 Tundra might also have a restyled headlights or at least new graphics, while the front bumper could become more massive. Some lower-trim levels will use halogen headlamps, but the topping models should use LEDs.

The interior will receive some minor changes as well. It will be nothing big, yet you can expect new upholstery and an upgraded multi-information display. The automaker will increase the number of standard driver-assistance features, so the facelifted 2018 Toyota Tundra should get pre-collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, automatic high-beams, and adaptive cruise control.

Under The Hood

Some rumors indicate that the 2018 Toyota Tundra could get a hybrid drivetrain, but we think otherwise. The hybrid drivetrain won’t be available before the arrival of the new-generation pickup truck. Instead, the updated model will use the existing engine options and a new gearbox. Yes, Toyota will add a 10-speed automatic gearbox, which should boost the efficiency of the truck. You will be able to choose between two V8 mills. The smaller 4.6-liter option will be able to produce 310 horsepower, while the larger naturally aspirated 5.7-liter engine should pump out 381 hp.
