GMC’s light-duty pickup truck is getting ready to receive a complete redesign. We know that because we managed to catch a testing model while it was doing some road tests. We know it’s the prototype of the 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 because it shows certain details that are typical for GMC’s vehicles only.
For instance, the completely wrapped truck sports the characteristic headlights and manufacturer’s signature A-pillar grab handle, which is enough for us to believe that this is actually the 2019 GMC Sierra 1500. Plus, Chevy’s new-generation Silverado 1500 has been spotted a little bit earlier and we know that these two can’t be separated. This particular prototype doesn’t reveal much, yet it appears that the new generation Sierra 1500 might be bigger from today’s model. There are a few additional inches between the wheels, while the hood sports are more aerodynamic than before. The current model hides its nose, yet we expect to see a new grille and probably redesigned headlights. Of course, the carmaker won’t skip the chance to add restyled front and rear bumpers and different taillights, as well as some very important changes inside. If everything goes according to plan, the 2019 Sierra 1500 will get more space inside and plenty of useful technologies.
The redesigned pickup truck will ride on a new platform, which will make it lighter and more rigid. However, the carmaker won’t exaggerate with aluminum parts as Ford did with the latest F-150. In any case, the 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 will also host a number of changes under the hood. According to the information we have, the producer will kill the current 4.3L V-6 engine in favor of the more efficient 3.6L DOHC V-6. But that’s not all. No, they are planning to add a V6 diesel and some kind of hybrid powertrains as well. Of course, the topper will use a 6.2-liter V8, while the truck should keep the 5.3-liter mill unchanged. An eight-speed will be the standard transmission, but higher trims will likely get a new 10-speed gearbox.
Judging by the latest rumors, the 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 will be introduced early next year at 2018 NAIAS, but it won’t hit the showrooms before late 2018. The price should change drastically.
